Jotun (Valhalla Edition) brings a great artistic style and amazing scenery and brings Norse mythology to reality. The game tells the stories and trials of Thora, a Shieldmaiden who fell and drowned, but was given a second chance and must now please the Gods to grant her entry into Valhalla. But does Jotun do enough to prove itself to Odin and ascend to the halls of greatness, or will it languish within the depths of Helheim and forever be forgotten? Við skulum finna út!

The simple to play mechanics in Jotun are easy to pick up and learn. Its combat sequences consist mainly of using your oversized axe with well-timed rolls as well as limited-use power-ups, but this does make for sluggish movement, where the focus is to take down foes as quickly as possible. The dull roll mechanic, as well as the time in-between each of them, serve little purpose as you can simply walk around an obstacle and the enemies you face. Even the motions in between attacks make it frustrating and make the experience frustrating when trying to fend off attackers making you feel less in control of the actions and your surroundings.

Mapping out your journey through Jotun may be a bit difficult as the game doesn’t offer as a sense of direction as to where you should be heading to. You are thrown into this vast world and must find your own bearings and find your way with only minimal hints as to where to go. It does deliver on a sense of loneliness and wonder, but it doesn’t fully put those ideas to good use as you may get caught going around in circle figuring the how to’s of the game when you first play it.

The game’s vast world offers a straightforward narrative. Obtain a few runes and then face off against the bosses, rinse and repeat. It really isn’t a complex story when you play it, but the dialog immerses you into thinking that you are part of a much more convoluted fable. Its rich storytelling truly helps bring out the fantasy of the adventure at hand, but the game also has its issues with far too simple moments of wandering the wilderness. These sections, in particular, felt misguided and out of place in comparison to the richer moments of Jotun that truly capture the identity of the game.

The boss battles are one of the highlights found within Jotun. These massive encounters will truly put your skills to the test as well as fill the screen with their presence. It’s a shame that no other moments within the game feel as much as a highlight as facing off against these mighty champions as the minor foes feel more part of the environment rather an actual threat. Not only that, but many enemies are rather forgettable and easily ignored while venturing, but at least the far larger and nefarious bosses are a wonder to behold on their own.

Jotun’s artistically crafted world looks like a moving piece of art being shaped right before you. The flow from one region to the next feels astounding and captures the true visions of Norse mythology in a simple yet elegant way. From the breathtaking opening view of the world to the howling snowy summits, to its darkened caverns, the game offers a visual presentation like no other that is both charming and graceful to behold. The sights and sounds all come together in this picture book that is truly a marvel to look at.

This aesthetically pleasing game also comes with its own charming dialog that is spoken in Icelandic. This once again brings out the narrative and truly immerses players within the world of Jotun. Thora’s self-narrating and her dialog with Odin truly captures the essence of what it meant to appease the Gods which would be as though it was captured within folklore itself. In an era of gaming where many indie developers will opt to choose the nostalgia of the 8-bit route, it is refreshing to see that Thunder Lotus Games chose to create a world of wonders with what looks like a drawing in motion.

Jotun (Valhalla Edition) isn’t overly long, spanning roughly between eight and ten hours and most of it will be sent backtracking and venturing the world which does bring its own pros and cons. On the positive side of things, you get to return to its awe-inspiring world and enjoy the scenery once more, but ultimately get fatigued from your time exploring. While this isn’t much of a game breaker, it goes without saying that if you are looking for a fast paced and linear experience, Jotun (Valhalla Edition) might not be right for you.

At the price of $14.99, it’s hard not to recommend the enhanced version of Jotun. From my repeated statements of how utterly beautiful the game that blends its Norse mythos and it’s easy to pick up gameplay makes it a great buy. While all versions look and play identically from one another, the Wii U version does offer to have the map on the GamePad, which is an added bonus. On top of that, for the first week of its release, Jotun (Valhalla Edition) has been discounted on all platforms at a 10% discount.

Jotun (Valhalla Edition) has proven its worth and the rights to ascend to the Realm of Champions. Its meticulously hand-drawn inspired world, as well as the epic encounters against the gargantuan bosses truly, come to life right before your very eyes. While its gorgeous surroundings and atmosphere capture the Norse mythology to a tee, its lackluster exploration, and stiff combat mechanics hinders the overall experience. Even through its trials, Thora’s journey will ascend to the heavens and have songs sung by the heroes within the gates of Valhalla.
