Developed by a three-person development studio, TFL Studios, The Eternal Castle [Remastered] is a new cinematic platformer title that comes straight from the late 80s. The Eternal Castle sits in the genre that is not too much explored in the modern days of cinematic platforming. Some of the best titles included in this genre include Another World and Prince of Persia and now The Eternal Castle [Remastered] finally comes out and lets players experience this brilliant genre on modern consoles. This is our review of The Eternal Castle Remastered on Nintendo Switch in which we explore some alien worlds and land some killer combos.

  1. The Eternal Castle is a remaster of an old classic, except it kind of isn't. The story is a little peculiar but the game does look quite fantastic and it's available now on Linux. In regards to the brand new Linux version, the developer sent out a Twitter post early this morning to note that a Linux version is now up thanks to the help of Linux.
  2. The complete game is composed by 4 worlds plus THE ETERNAL CASTLE: WILDERNESS(INTRO), ANCIENT RUINS, FORGOTTEN CITY, TECH LAB. Each world will have 4 levels, each world has a different kind of gameplay, leading up to a final boss.

The Eternal Castle begins with you entering a planet in your ship, but the planet shoots down your ship and you are left stranded on a hostile planet. You are left with no option but to use your melee skills and weapons found on the world to defend yourself, fix your ship, and eventually make your way to The Eternal Castle. The game features four completely different areas that unlock after you complete the beginning area of the game that also serves as a tutorial level. After finding your way back to your crashed ship, you unlock fast travel and get access to three worlds each offering a unique challenge, enemies, and bosses for you to fight.

Right after you begin playing The Eternal Castle, you will notice the unique art style of the game. Nothing is clear on the screen, and everything can only be recognized by sheer outlines or reflections of them as the colors shift from one to another. This unique art style is known as 2-bit CGA color where only four colors appear on the screen. This is not a very common practice these days for making video games, and as far as I can remember, The Eternal Castle is the only modern game to ever use this color scheme. This makes levels a really unique challenge to navigate through on their own.

One of the most impressive mechanics when it comes to gameplay is how meaty the characters actually feel. As you move around, you will feel the weight of the character as it turns, slips down a slope, or falls down a ledge. Unlike most of the games where the controls are crisp and sharp and you know exactly how the character will react when you push that joystick, The Eternal Castle adds weight and realism to the control and you will feel this weight every time you try to jump, land from a fall and try to stop from a quick sprint. This adds a challenge that very few adventure games have delivered in this era.

This is made even more challenging as each action consumes stamina. Whether you punch, run, jump or kick, every action uses your stamina and since the stamina bar is limited, you are allowed to perform these actions only until you have enough stamina left. This is most prominent in battles where you have to dodge, sprint, punch, and kick fight various bosses of the games and you must balance the offense and defense to survive as both require stamina and you will fail to survive without a proper balance in these two stances.

When it comes to the combat of The Eternal Castle, it is a mixed bag. First of all, it is not that fluid that you would expect from a modern game. Since the character has some weight, you will have to balance it out in order to actually land your punches and kicks. While the game offers plenty of combo options when you combine your punches and kicks together, you still have to look out for the stamina which prevents the game from turning into a kick and fist fest. It took me some time getting used to the combat mechanics of The Eternal Castle but once you get the hang of it, you start loving it.

While there are plenty of moves up your sleeve when it comes to melee combat such as generic punches and kicks and some punch/kick combos that you can land on your enemies, you can also land some hits while you are knocked down on the ground. You also have ranged weapons for shooting enemies from a good range, but ammo is not that easy to find in the game, and like most melee-focused titles, you have to save your ammo for situations where you really need it. It does a decent amount of damage, but the rare ammo makes it a commodity that you cannot simply afford to use carelessly. However, when you do use them, it becomes a lifesaver and really turns the tide of the combat.

For this very reason, most of the enemies and bosses are close-ranged as well as they rush into your face to beat you to a pulp. Certain bosses do require a careful strategy of both melee and ranged attacks making fights a little more complicated than just fistfights. However, nothing in the game is too crazy difficult that would just pound you to pieces. While the combat mechanics itself are challenging, the game itself is not challenging at all. Get the hang of the combat and gameplay and you will breeze through the game in around 3 hours. That is how simple the game becomes once you understand how the combat works.

At first, the game might seem tough but various meditation spots that also offer saving points are scattered throughout the maps. If your health is low, you can meditate at these spots to not only save the game but also refill your health. As you get comfortable with the game, chances become very slim that you would ever need to worry about the health because progression not only makes you good at melee combat but also unlocks additional items and weapons for your use. You can always store two weapons with you so you can use your new abilities and weapons to take down enemies really quickly. The visuals sometimes make a little difficult to outline the enemies and the maps are filled with traps as well but most of the time, you easily spot both of them and prepare quickly. You will also play through some of the best chase sequences that pout modern AAA titles to shame.

The Eternal Castle [Remastered] is a hidden gem that offers an excellent amount of content. Apart from the linear story progression, the game offers branching parts that allow you to see new things and fight new enemies making multiple playthroughs an excellent option for the game. If you really want to see the true ending of the game, you can grind all the way to collecting all of the items that the game has hidden and while doing so, you can also unlock two bonus levels one of which offers PvP action as well. This makes The Eternal Castle an excellent blend of modern and retro that should be in your playlist.

Final Verdict:

For me, The Eternal Castle [Remastered] is an excellent throwback to classic cinematic platformers and a genre that has been lost for quite some time. The art design of the game is nostalgic and really makes you feel like you are back in the 80s from which this game is originally inspired from. Complimenting the neo-visuals of the title, the soundtrack is also an excellent choice that really sets the mood of the game. With combat being a mechanic solely dependent on your playstyle and liking, I can easily say that The Eternal Castle is a solid cinematic platformer that will surely keep you on your toes no matter how proficient you get with the combat system of the game. From its first Dos-inspired loading screen to the very last boss fight and the bonus stages it offers, this is one cinematic adventure that will surely give you a taste of the 80s. Highly recommended for Nintendo Switch.
