  • Science and Industry – A team-based multiplayer mod in which players take the roles of security guards at two competing research firms. It features a weapons research system.

Each player is assigned a quarry, and the object is to murder him or her with nobody watching, while at the same time watching out for, and defending themselves against their own hunter. Later released as a standalone game on the Source engine.[11]
  • Sven Co-op – Is a co-op mod in which players fight against computer-controlled enemies, it was released as a standalone game in 2016. Apart from user contributed missions it is also possible to play co-operatively through the original Half-Life game.[12][13]

Serverside mods[edit]

The Half-Life serverside engine could originally only support one mod at a time, because it used to load a DLL which contained the standard engine as well as the mod.

Metamod is a serverside mod that fixed this, allowing multiple mods to be run at once. Many such mods run under Metamod, referred to as Metamod plugins.[14]

The AMX Mod[15] was a plugin running under Metamod that allowed scripts to be written for the servers. AMX Mod provides dedicated servers with various effects and game modes. It got its name from the filename extension of compiled Pawn files, which stands for Abstract Machine eXecutive. In 2007 the AMX Mod project was merged into the related AMX Mod X, which had more features.[16]

Deathmatch Classic was conceived by Valve as a tribute to id Software, and is essentially a remake of the multiplayer component of id's Quake.[3] Deatmatch Classic uses the GoldSrc engine, which was based on the QuakeWorld engine, which was in turn based on the QUAKE and GLQUAKE (which was based on QUAKE) engines. It had taken Valve roughly three months to develop.[4]

The original release included five maps converted from Quake. The gameplay is similar to Quake Deathmatch, with essentially the same weapons (except the weapon for melée combat, which is Half-Life's trademark crowbar instead of the original axe).[4]DMC also imitates Quake's physics, which allows an advanced player to gain a lot of extra speed or jump very high by using a number of movement skills such as bunny hopping and rocket jumping.

Community[edit]

Not enjoying widespread popularity like the team-oriented Half-Life mods, Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, DMC has found its fan base particularly among nostalgic deathmatch veterans. Further Quake maps were converted for DMC by fans, and original new maps designed.

Many of the DMC servers offer a further modification of the game titled DMC Pro. It includes a Quake-style sound pack, custom maps, capture the flag and alternate versions of the default maps where the two most powerful weapons are more easily available, and there is a plenty of ammo for them. DMC Pro is characterized by extremely hectic action, the rocket launcher being practically the only weapon used.

The default game speed in DMC is somewhat slower than in Quake. The weapons scale from the basic shotgun to the rocket launcher and the Lightning Gun, a powerful directed energy weapon. Three types of bonuses are scattered over the maps which give the player a temporary special power: Quad Damage, Invulnerability, and the Ring of Shadows.

Reception[edit]

GameSpy stated that DMC 'brought back memories of late nights gone by playing Quake,' and praised the visual aspects of the game.[4] As of August 2017, user reviews of Deathmatch Classic on Steam are very positive, with 82% of reviewers praising the game one way or another.[5]
